I understand that SOK9T serves NYC and most areas of Western and Southern Connecticut. All New York training takes place in Central Park West at 96th or 59th Streets, just inside the park entrances. CT training occurs in local park areas near you, and your home. Most issues related to aggression, reactivity, or guarding, even indoors, are most effectively addressed in a different environment, primarily outdoors. In NYC, we meet in Central Park West, where there are fenced-in areas when needed, plenty of distractions, and many dogs and people to work around. *However, we may plan at least one in-home visit if any unwanted behavioral issues persist inside the home.* Training at your home depends on your location. Yes, I understand that SOK9T has specific areas it covers. If you live outside that area or an outer borough, you can meet and train in Central Park West locations. In CT, we will give options on where to meet.
As a Balanced Trainer, a good portion of my teaching uses positive reinforcement methods that include markers, motivation, food, and praise. But I also use training tools to communicate what I want from the dog. Once a dog knows a behavior and has trained using multiple reps and a lot of positive reinforcement, and doesn't do what is asked, or to help stop unwanted behavior, there needs to be a consequence. (Think, children, not doing their homework, it's a good chance you'll take their phone away for the day!) So the consequence for the dog may be a solid verbal No, body pressure, or leash correction. The tools I use may include slip leashes, prong collars, or e-collars, as well as toys, play, people, and other dogs for distraction and socialization.
